What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable teeth replacements for both the upper and lower jaw. They consist of a gum base and artificial teeth that sit on top of them. At TJ O'shea DMD, our dentist uses an intra-oral scanner to take digital impressions of your teeth and gums that he later send to a lab to manufacture your custom dentures. They he uses a combination of adhesive and saliva to stick to the gums and fit comfortably in your mouth.

In historical times, the manufacturing of dentures often involved the incorporation of unconventional elements. Remarkably, one such surprising element utilized for crafting denture bases was the shells of tortoises.

Benefits of Dentures

More Youthful Appearance

Dentures restore your missing teeth, giving you a complete set of beautiful teeth indistinguishable from your natural ones. They also reverse the sunken appearance common in people with missing teeth, resulting in a pleasant, more youthful appearance without the need for invasive surgery.

Improves Speech and Chewing

Proper articulation is almost impossible with missing teeth. Dentures replace the missing teeth, ensuring you articulate your words properly and communicate effectively. They also fill in the gaps in your jaw to allow proper chewing and biting of food, so you can enjoy a healthy and unrestricted diet.

Easy to Maintain

Unlike most oral appliances, dentures are extremely easy to maintain. All you have to do is to remove and rinse them with cold water after eating. You should also brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush daily and plop them in a jar of cold water every night before sleep.

Examination and Treatment Planning

Our dentists will first examine your teeth to determine your candidacy for dentures. The examination involves reviewing your dental history and medical information. We’ll also take X-rays of your teeth and gums and use the information to create a treatment plan that details the denture process and answer any questions you may have.

Taking Impressions and Bite Registration

With the treatment plan in place, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth using our state-of-the-art intra-oral scanner. The scanner creates to-scale renders of your teeth and gums that we send to a lab to manufacture your dentures. The dentist will also ask you to bite a thin sheet to register your bite.

Denture Fabrication and Fitting

Denture fabrication takes about six weeks to three months, depending on the type and number of missing teeth. Once ready, we’ll schedule an appointment to fit the dentures. During the fitting, the dentist will place the dentures in your mouth, check their fit and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit. If everything checks out, they’ll release you with instructions for taking care of your dentures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Difference Between Partials and Dentures?

A dentist near you may recommend martial dentures for patients with a couple of missing teeth in either jaw. Complete (full) dentures are for patients with all their teeth missing on both the upper and lower jaw. These dentures consist of all thirty-two teeth on both jaws and essentially become your “new” teeth.
